26th April 2014... Limerick Regatta On the weekend of the on 26th April, Clonmel Rowing Club competed at Limerick Regatta on the Shannon at O’Brien’s Bridge. The weather was bloody awful with heavy showers throughout the day. Luckily we had our new Club Gazebo deployed but even this was inadequate as the muck was everywhere. We had to pull out our Junior men’s quad scull out as the lads did not have enough gear changes for the weather conditions and looked worse for wear even though they qualified for the final.
Our Novice girls had a great day winning the Novice coxed quad and the Novice single scull. Womens Novice 4x+ Cox Mark Bates, Box Ciara O’Loughlin, 2 Eimer O’Donoghue, 3 Holly Fehilly & Stroke Aisling O’Donnell.
Womens novice 1x, Ciara O’ Loughlin.
12th April 2014 ... Skibereen Regatta Last weekend Clonmel Rowing Club competed at Skibereen Regatta held at the National Rowing Centre at Farren Wood outside Cork City where we were winners in three vents. The university championships were held on the Friday and the Skibereen regatta was on the Saturday and Sunday. Skibereenis the first of the Grand league regatta’s this year so a big entry from all over the country were taking part in a long weekend of racing. We entered 24 events ranging from Junior 14/15 boys and girls to our senior and intermediate Men’s scullers. In the men’s senior scull our Alan Prendergast came in third in the B final but Alan was suffering from tendonitis in his left wrist which cost him first place in the B final. We also had an entry in the Men’s senior quadruple scull event. We had a composite crew of Clonmel, UL, Castleconnell& Portadown. Because of Alan’s wrist problem we had to substitute our Junior 18 sculler, Stewart Channon into the crew. In their first heat the composite won the heat and so for the final were up against the fancied UCC quad. The composite crew had a great race in the final and this time just came up short finishing a close second to the UCC crew. Stuart rowed in the bow position and so had to do the steering. Well done to Stuart. On the Sunday our Junior 18B sculler Stuart Channon won the ‘A’ final in great style beating the Belfast sculler by five seconds. Our Sean Lonergan won the ‘B’ final in a time that would have placed him third in the ‘A’ final. Next up were our Girls Junior 15 quad scull who beat Skibereen in their final. Finally our Men’s Junior 18B coxed quad scull crew of Hugh Kinsella, Liam O’Donnell, Chris Britton, Alex Chadfield and cox Cloe Anderson finished of the day by winning their event. Alex Chadfield substituted for Jake Anderson who had a bad throat infection. Our next regatta is Limerick on the 26thApril which is being held at O’Brien’s Bridge.
7th April 2014 ... Neptune Regatta. Last weekend Clonmel Rowing Club competed at the first Regatta of the 2014 season at Neptune Regatta in Island Bridge, Dublin. This year this regatta had its biggest ever entry requiring racing on Friday evening and with some sculling time trials at 7 am on the Saturday morning. Nome of our athletes had ever competed at this regatta so learning to navigate the various bend while in the heat of battle was something they had to come to terms very quickly. The day started off with some showers early on but the weather got better as the day progressed and ended up being a great day out. This has been a rare weather event lately as were have been unable to row on the Suir from the beginning of December up to two week ago. The regatta consists of a 1200 meter course with some bends and is two boat racing. So to win an event would require several races. We had fourteen crews competing at Junior 14, 15, 16, 18 and senior. In the men’s Junior 18 sculling event we had two scullers entered and they both put away their opposition and ended up racing each other in the final. In the final Stuart Channon beat Sean Lonergan. A rare occasion where Clonmel ended up with two people in the same final. In the Women’s Junior 16 single scull Jade Adare O’Malley navigated the course really well and won each heat and the final to take the win in the event. Jade then also competed in the Junior 16 double scull with Tara Cooney where the also took the win in this event. Our women’s Junior 15 double scull of Keely O’Reilly and Aoife O’Farrell won their heats to get to the final but were beaten by Coláiste Cháirain from Limerick. Our next event is Skibereen Regatta at the National Rowing Centre in Farranwood, Cork which is this weekend.
